After immigrating to Cincinnati in 1848, Best started a mineral water manufacture at 205-207 W. McMicken, using the backyard to produce and bottle the water and using 205 W. McMicken's storefront as a grocery store to sell it. He and his extended family lived upstairs at 205-207 W. McMicken until the turn of the 20th century. Thereafter, both buildings were home to a diversity of immigrants -- Hungarians, Appalachians, African Americans from the deep south -- who filled up the apartments for much of the 20th century. The commercial storefront at 205 W. McMicken was home to a barbershop from the early 1900s-1940s. Kunst commissioned original artwork by local artists to depict this history, told through a series of posters (which come with the building). Additional history storytelling can be found throughout the building -- in framed newspaper articles and old photos in common areas.
