The Book House, 8469 E. Jefferson Ave., commissioned in

1911 by James Burgess Book, JR. & built by renowned architect, Louis Kamper is an architectural masterpiece restored during twelve years to its original grandeur.

Although a specific national origin for the mansion is elusive, the neoclassical 18th century French & Italian modes have become its model & the Petit Trianon at Versailles exercised major influence. When the mansion was completed, the drawings were donated to the DIA where they remain today & were used with permission to restore this historic mansion.

From unattributed writings, the following description is true of the restored mansion today. “The three-story facade is dominated by six colossal pilasters, within which are framed the openings. The use of large rectangular windows on the 2nd floor, above arched French door-windows on the 1st, provides a dominance of the 2nd-floor fenestration that is suggestive of the piano nobile. The imposing entrance consists of limestone steps leading to a raised terrace with a classical balustrade & a grand French Classic arched entrance with fine wrought iron grillwork backed by plate glass; this is topped by a -wrought-iron balcony & a 2nd-floor window with a rich carved frame that gives it dominance over its neighbors.”

The magnificent property measures approx.15,000 sq. ft and is comprised of: The main building with priceless original elements; The carriage house w/4 car garage & 6-room living quarters on the 2nd floor; An Italian courtyard & an additional two lots of land developed as a park/garden with dozens of exotic trees, a herbaceous border & many perennial flowering plants.

The house features a marble and limestone entrance foyer leading to a Great Hall with Italian limestone columns & French Caen stone walls extending to the 3rd floor, Greek Pentelikon flooring with a grand central staircase of Thassos Marble on the first and second levels & Italian walnut on the third floor. The

baluster rails are Italian walnut. There are soaring twelve-foot ceilings on the 1st and 2nd floors, and 10.5 ft ceilings on the 3rd floor. The main floor has three large reception rooms, a drawing room w/ornate marble fireplace, dining room & a music room. These rooms have large French window doors leading to the porch and Loggia, the west entrance which has a marble mosaic floor & a gold mosaic ceiling.

Exquisite ornate moldings & plaster medallions exist throughout the house. Interior doors are almost 8 feet tall. Where flooring is not marble, it is comprised of oak, teak & walnut.

The kitchen suite consists of the kitchen, a butler’s room, breakfast room, & pantry. Italian porcelain tile lines the walls from ceiling to floor & the floors are Italian marble mosaic with the exception of the breakfast room which has a terrazzo floor. The kitchen suite can be accessed from the wrought iron gate on the east entrance arch and limestone steps to a porch. The cabinets in the kitchen & Butler’s room are imported antique French walnut, the stove is a French La Cornue, dual gas/electric range imported from France.

On the 2nd level there is a Master Suite w/bedroom & marble fireplace, a dressing room, a boudoir and ensuite bathroom with English bathtub. There is a second master ensuite bedroom and two further ensuite bedrooms all w/large walk-in closets. The 2nd & 3rd floors also have maids’ closets w/washing sinks & laundry chutes.

The 3rd floor has an ornate balcony overlooking the three floors of the house. It consists of a large ballroom, a library, 3 or 4 additional bedrooms & maid’s suite. The rear of each floor is connected by a walnut spiral staircase beneath a skylight.

The basement consists of two separate parts.

Prior to restoration & installation of new utilities, the entire property was remediated & received

Certificate of Compliance. Post restoration the property received its Certificate of Occupancy. The building retains its mixed-use B-4 designation in the City of Detroit,
